Repainting is not just about looks — it protects your biggest asset. Here is a realistic guide to how often different surfaces need attention.
Paint does more than make your home look good — it is a protective barrier against moisture, sun and wear. Knowing when to repaint helps you avoid costly damage down the track. Here are some general guidelines.
Interior walls: every 5–10 years
Living areas and bedrooms usually hold up well and can go 7–10 years between repaints. High-traffic areas like hallways, kitchens and children's rooms take more punishment and may need refreshing every 3–5 years.
Exteriors: every 5–10 years
This varies a lot with material and exposure. Rendered and timber surfaces facing the western sun weather faster than sheltered walls. If you see fading, chalking or hairline cracks, it is time.
Other surfaces
- Trims, doors and window frames: every 3–5 years (they take heavy wear)
- Roofs: every 10–15 years, or when the coating dulls and fades
- Fences and decks: every 3–5 years depending on timber and exposure
Signs you should not ignore
Peeling, flaking, bubbling, visible timber, mould growth or colour that has gone chalky are all signs the protective layer has failed. Left too long, moisture gets into the substrate and repairs become far more expensive than a repaint.
